Cuts in welfare spending look inevitable whoever wins the next Election. Neither Government nor Opposition, however, has spelt out a vision of what comes after the ‘Welfare State’. A ‘welfare society’ – in which public agencies act more often as catalysts and enablers rather than, automatically, as providers of state dole – might be an alternative. But who’s going to have the courage to commit? We’re looking forward to hearing from ‘Red Tory’ radical Phillip Blond on the subject at the next Chamberlain Resident University Lecture on 18 November. In the meantime, why not share your views?
Imagine if community organisations were able to pay people to do work that strengthens their neighbourhood without it affecting their benefits. Imagine if for every pound spent on the scheme in benefit payments, it could be shown that £10 of social value was added in neighbourhoods with high unemployment. Community Allowance is an idea being piloted that aims to show how a change in benefits regulations could achieve all this.
