TAKING PART – a Local Democracy Week Chamberlain Lecture in the Chamberlain Room at the Council House, Victoria Square, Birmingham on Friday 16 October at 4-6pm.  Dick Atkinson of Balsall Heath Forum and Melissa Shervington of First Class Youth Network will speak on rebuilding community participation in neighbourhoods.

Balsall Heath Forum covers the Balsall Heath priority neighbourhood which is ahead of the Birmingham city average in terms of:

NI1 – community cohesion

NI4 – community empowerment

NI5 – neighbourhood satisfaction.

First Class Youth Network engages young people who wouldn’t normally talk to mainstream public agencies and develops young leaders with the aim of transforming public services.

It will be interesting to see the mix of people at this event! I hope you get some of the neighbourhood managers along to it. Not that I think they are no good and need training, but they have the difficult job of changing the way services are actually delivered in our neighbourhoods. They need all the support they can get!

It’s an interesting mix of participants booked: mainly voluntary and community groups, but also local authority, housing, police and health service people. We have invited all the neighbourhood managers… they have a training day during the day, but I’m hopeful that some will nip over that’s finished and end the week with some stimulating Chamberlain conversation! I’m looking forward to it.
